ANGELS AMONG US, by the State of California Office of Child Abuse Prevention. Video. A film for clergy. Clergy discuss child abuse and its ramifications in the religious community and resources that are available for perpetrator as well as victim.

THE BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY BOOK: A FAMILY GUIDE FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION, by Sol and Judith Gordon. Book. 1992. Written for children ages 3-9 years. Intended to be read aloud by parent. Included is a parent’s guide and list of additional books a parent might want to read. Designed to help children to feel better about themselves, and realize that they have their parents’ support and concern for their safety. Gives essential information about sexual assault so that parents can respond to questions young children have about sexuality or bring up the subject if children have not asked by age five.

BITTER EARTH: CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN INDIAN COUNTRY, from the National Indian Justice Center. Video. 1993. An educational tool for increasing the awareness of child sexual abuse in Indian Country among community members and non-Indian providers.

CHILD AT RISK, by Dan Grothaus.  Video.  This video presents an in-depth look at child molestation.  It includes interviews with child and adult victims, victims' parents, and the abusers.

DESPAIR TURNED INTO RAGE: UNDERSTANDING AND HELPING ABUSED, NEGLECTED, AND ABANDONED YOUTH, by Paul Lavin and Cynthia Park. Book. 1999. Those who work with abused, neglected and abandoned youth may benefit from the interviewing techniques and the three intervention strategies explained in this book. The book also includes examples of youth whose antisocial behavior can be changed when we - and the youth themselves - understand the underlying cause of the anger and disrespect they display.

EARLY START: INTERVENTION FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, by T.G. Bordenkircher, Ph.D., and T. Casciate. Video. 1993. This program identifies high-risk children in elementary and middle school. Provides prevention and intervention services for children, schools, and families. Includes 2 tapes and a manual.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INCEST, by Karen Bornemann Spies. Book. 1992. Describes patterns and kinds of touching, who are the victims, who becomes an abuser, and what to do when it happens. Plainly written in large print.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SEXUAL ABUSE, by Evan Stark and Marsha Holly. Book. 1995. Defines sexual abuse, rape, and incest, and explains that it is not the victim’s fault. Plainly written in large print.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT, by Elizabeth Bouchard. Book. 1994. Describes how to spot sexual harassment, how to avoid it and move on. Plainly written in large print.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHILDREN, from the State of California Office of Child Abuse Prevention. Video. IN THEIR OWN WORDS: A SEXUAL ABUSE WORKBOOK FOR TEENAGE GIRLS, by Lulie Munson and Karen Riskin. Curriculum. 1995. Text explains what sexual abuse is and describes how it often teenagers are affected. Gives questions and activities to help victims explore how they were affected and to feel more in control of their lives.  Recommended for use with a therapist in individual or group therapy.

JUNTAS CONTRA EL ABUSO (TOGETHER AGAINST ABUSE), from the Department of Social Services, State of California. Video. Discussions and dramas with teachers, children, and parents help them understand child abuse. Encourages adults to talk about abuse in their childhood and understand and prevent abuse of their children. Spanish.

LET’S PREVENT ABUSE, from the PACER Center. Book. 1990. A prevention handbook designed for people who work with young children and their families. Also for families with children ages birth to 5, especially those who have or are at risk for disabilities.

LITERATURE REVIEW OF SEXUAL ABUSE, by Diane DePanfilis. Booklet/Pamphlet. 1996. Reviews cutting-edge literature on the nature, extent, dynamics and effects of child sexual abuse. Examines America’s response to preventative interventions and treatment efforts for child sexual abuse.

NO EASY ANSWERS: A SEXUAL ABUSE CURRICULUM FOR JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS, from Cordelia Anderson Kent, M.A., Mary A. Venier, and Jill Applegate. Book. 1982. This curriculum helps students develop skills in communicating their feelings, attitudes and expectations about sexuality and the exploitative or abusive use of sex, and provides protection and prevention skills.

NURTURING PROGRAMS FOR ABUSIVE PARENTS, by Dr. Stephen J. Bavolek. Audio. 1992. Dr. Bavolek in conversation with professionals about creating nurturing environments for primary prevention in dysfunctional families.

OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE: A CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE PREVENTION CURRICULUM FOR NATIVE AMERICAN HEAD START PROGRAMS, by Dr. Terry Cross. Curriculum. 1991. This curriculum with video has been designed to help Head Start Programs take a leading role in the effort to stop the cycle of abuse in Native American communities through cultivating broad community support and reaching out to a greater number of Native American children.

PARENTING PIECE BY PIECE, by Terri Newcom and Judith Myers-Walls.  Curriculum.  2000.  This is a curriculum outline for a series of eight parenting education sessions.  It was designed for use with parents who have been mandated to attend parenting training due to their identification as physically or emotionally abusive and/or neglectful parents.  It is not aimed at sexually abusive parents.  Other use requires adaptation and revision.  English.

PERSONAL SAFETY SKILLS: A CURRICULUM FOR ABUSE/NEGLECT PREVENTION FOR GRADES 3-6, by Vince Estrada, Carin Shapiro, Ann Loving, and Annalee Nissenholtz. Curriculum. Outlines for ten lessons on communication, personal rights, sexual abuse secrets, and awareness for grades 3-6.

Skeletal outlines for professionals working with groups of children to prevent sexual abuse. Well-informed children are more likely to be safe.

RED, WHITE AND BRUISES: SPANKING IN THE U.S.A.: WHAT TO DO INSTEAD, by Stephen J. Bavolek, Ph.D. Booklet/Pamphlet. 1994. Discusses a few important reasons why spanking children should be eliminated as a parenting practice, as well as alternatives to spanking.

SCARED SILENT: EXPOSING AND ENDING CHILD ABUSE, an Oprah Winfrey TV Show. Video. 1992. Contains strong language and graphic descriptions. Compelling film tells how child abuse starts and how it can be stopped. Profiles true stories of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse told by offenders and their victims.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND TEENS: A PROGRAM FOR POSITIVE CHANGE, by Susan Straus and Pamela Espeland. Book. 1992. Designed for grades 7-12, this book helps professionals identify and solve harassment problems, shows how to sensitize students and faculty /staff, design policy, develop grievance procedures, and create healthy, respectful learning and working environment.

SPANKING IN AMERICA, by Dr. Murray A. Straus. Audio. 1992. One of the audiocassettes in the "Effective Parenting Is Prevention" series from the 1992 California Parent Training Leadership Conference.

TALKING TO CHILDREN - TALKING TO PARENTS ABOUT SEXUAL ABUSE, by Lois Loontjens. Book. 1984. Companion piece to "He Told Me Not to Tell." Manual attempts to share experiences of King County Rape Relief in Renton, Washington, and offers presentations to open discussion with parents, teachers, and children. Divided into K-1st grade, 2nd and 3rd grades, 4th and 5th grades, and 6th grade.

TOUCH: WHAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT TOUCH, by Cordelia Anderson, Bonnie Morris, and Michael Robins. Video. 1993. Lindsay Wagner and Cordelia Anderson host the show and Illusion Theatre demonstrates the different kinds of touching and how to talk to people about body safety.

UNDERSTANDING AND RESPONDING TO THE SEXUAL BEHAVIOR OF CHILDREN: PRIMARY PERPETRATION PREVENTION PROJECT TRAINER’S MANUAL, by Gail Ryan, M.A., and Joanne Blum, M.A. Curriculum. 1988. Training package designed to promote adult understanding of children’s sexual behavior and to teach appropriate adult responses in order to be more aware and to intervene earlier in the development of sexually abusive patterns. Reports of various authors who are scholars in the field of family violence and responsible for raising public awareness of violence in all sorts of intimate relationships.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT SPANKING, by Dr. Murray Straus. Audio. 1993. Self-study guide identifies long-term and short-term effects of spanking and other corporal punishment. Helps listeners to understand some of the myths about spanking; identify ethnic/cultural similarities and differences in parents’ perceptions about spanking; be motivated to equip parents with skills that can be used instead of spanking.

WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? SEXUAL HARASSMENT INFORMATION FOR TEENS, by Gayle M. Stringer, M.A. Booklet/Pamphlet. 1995. General information for teens about harassment. It discusses harassment, what it is, what to do about it, boundaries, clear communication, and more.

YES, YOU CAN SAY NO, by Kathy Beland. Video. 1985. Video and guide for grades 2-6. A drama of a child being exploited by a once-trusted adult. He learns how, with help from his friends, to resist and report the abuse, as well as to handle everyday challenges and build his self-confidence.

YOUTH PROTECTION GUIDELINES, from the Boy Scouts of America. Video. 1990. A training film for volunteer leaders discussing the 5 points of training: define child abuse, describe child abuse, signs of child abuse, myths, and response to disclosures. Includes case histories.
