ACT SMART: HIV/AIDS EDUCATION CURRICULUM FOR THREE AGE GROUPS, by Boys & Girls Clubs of America and American Red Cross. Curriculum. 1995. This HIV/AIDS education curriculum incorporates age-appropriate learning activities. The program was developed based on the rationale that HIV/AIDS prevention education is most effective when young people have the opportunity to develop functional knowledge about HIV/AIDS, consider choices that support healthy behavior related to HIV/AIDS, and identify and practice skills that support these choices.

ARE YOU SAFE? A NATIONAL TEST ON CRIME PREVENTION, by National Crime Prevention Council. Video. 1990. Shown on CBS in 1990, this video heightens awareness of crime prevention and shows adults that they can do something about crime. A starting point for prevention-oriented discussions about community action.

AT HOME ALONE, by University Extension, University of Missouri / Lincoln University. Curriculum. A home-study course for families who care about their children at home alone. Four lessons: 1) Family Decision, 2) Families Talking It Over, 3) Establishing Rules, and 4) Safety Rules. All lessons include parent, child, and family activities that help with the transition to self-care.

The guide is designed to be used by parents who are HIV positive or terminally ill and by professionals to gather information on the parent's background and family history. Discusses making a will and future placement for children, if needed.

BIRTH CONTROL MATTERS, by Pharmacia and Upjohn. Video. A frank discussion of contraceptive methods by men, women, a doctor, and Maureen McCormack (Brady Bunch). Also includes discussion of STD's and abstinence.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS: JUST FOR YOU! A GUIDE FOR FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH EPILEPSY, by Gail Johnston Ellis, M.A.. Book. 1992. Written in 2 sections, one for siblings that can be read over again at different age levels, and one for grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., to further their understanding of epilepsy.

CHILD OF MINE: FEEDING WITH LOVE AND GOOD SENSE, by Ellyn Satter. Book. 1991. A book about nutrition during pregnancy and through toddlerhood. Finding a middle ground between extreme concern and no concern in child's nutritional care.

CHOOSING A PEDIATRICIAN, by Early Childhood Center, Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Audio. 1988. Questions and answers from the warmline about choosing a pediatrician, what to ask, how to explain the doctor visit to a child, and how to deal with doctors.

CONOCIENDO MAS SOBRE LA EPILEPSIA (UNDERSTANDING SEIZURE DISORDERS), from the Epilepsy Foundation of America. Video. 1989. This video, dubbed over with Spanish, explains basics about seizure disorders in children and adults. Closed-captioned.

MASTERING ASTHMA: A FAMILY'S GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING AND LIVING WITH CHILDHOOD ASTHMA, by American Academy of Pediatrics. Video. 1998. An entertaining and informative film for parents and children that takes viewers into the lives of three different families learning and about and living with childhood asthma.

MEALTIME MAGIC SERIES: MANAGING MEALTIME MENACES, MEALS FOR MUNCHKINS, START THE DAY OFF RIGHT/EATING BREAKFAST IS IMPORTANT, WHY DO WE EAT WHAT WE EAT?, by Carol E. Chandler, Joyce Fittro, and Joyce Coures. Curriculum. 1992. Each booklet deals with managing mealtime problems, nutrition, child development, recipes and food requirements for children 1-12 years.

RISING ABOVE GANGS AND DRUGS: HOW TO START A COMMUNITY RECLAMATION PROJECT, by Billie Sargent Hatchell. Curriculum. 1990. Provides goals and activities to use in implementing a network of community-based organizations and agencies to combat drug use and gang activities.

THE SAFE CHILD BOOK: FOR CHILDREN FROM 3 TO 16, by Sherryll Kraizer, Ph.D. Book. 1985. How to teach children to protect themselves in any situation. It gives parents techniques for teaching children how to protect themselves without making them afraid. Based on workshops which have been in operation since 1969.

SEIZURES AND EPILEPSY IN CHILDHOOD: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS, SECOND EDITION, by M. Freeman, M.D., Eileen P.G. Vining, M.D., and Diana J. Pillas. Book. 1990. This book provides information about the latest approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy in childhood, including the use of the ketogenic diet as treatment for children who either do not respond to traditional drug therapy or who suffer intolerable side effects from medications. The authors also have included a chapter addressing the special needs chldren with epilepsy have regarding routine health care.

Introduces concepts of nutrition in child care and classroom setting. Information centers around three principles: 1) nutrients are inside foods, 2) nutrients perform specific functions in the body, and 3) behavior modification is effective in strengthening individual and family eating patterns.

SMOKE DETECTIVES: GRADES K-6, by State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. Curriculum. 1990. Teaching classroom or group of children fire safety and prevention tools. Can be used to enhance basic learning skills while reinforcing the vital fire safety messages. Video shows 4 school-age children teaching a vampire the basics of fire safety.

SMOKE-FREE CHILD CARE, from Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Massachusetts Health Research Institute.  Curriculum  1992.  Curriculum for home child care providers to encourage them to provide a smoke-free environment for the children in their care. Materials include “A Study Guide for Family Day care Providers,” in English and Spanish; a booklet describing smoke-free child care, in English and Spanish; and “Coqui Likes His Air Smoke-Free,” a coloring story and coloring book in English and Spanish.

SU BEBE SALUDABLE, from the I Am Your Child Foundation. Video. 2000. This video, hosted by Cristina Saralegui, provides parents with information on how to maintain good health during pregnancy; bottle-feeding versus breast-feeding; when parent and child should visit the doctor; what foods to feed a child and when; and the importance of exercise. TOOLS TO INVOLVE PARENTS IN GANG PREVENTION, by the National Crime Prevention Council Curriculum. 1992. Materials for parents with children ages 5-12. Reproducible materials to help communities with emerging gang problems to enlist parents' aid in discouraging individuals from joining them and gangs from gaining a foothold. Spanish language, closed-captioned videotape encourages patients to vaccinate their children against childhood diseases before they reach school age, and reminds them that many clinics charge little or nothing for the immunizations. Uses dramatizations and interviews and includes a vaccination schedule for different kinds of shots.

WHEN YOUNG CHILDREN ARE INJURED: FAMILIES AS CAREGIVERS IN HOSPITALS AND AT HOME, by Marilyn Lash, M.S.W., and Jane Haltiwanger, M.A., Ed.M. Booklet/Pamphlet. 1994. This guide is for families with infants toddlers or preschoolers who were seriously injured with spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, near drownings, major burns and so on. There are two goals 1) let parents know they are not alone and 2) give families practical information for choices and decisions that will help them adjust and prepare for the future.

Provides detailed information for parents, family members, health care professionals, teachers and school administrators, and anyone concerned with the welfare of children with rheumatic diseases. Includes information about the major types of childhood arthritis, medications, selecting a doctor, working with teachers and administrators to reduce the impact of rheumatic illness in school, coping with the impact of illness on the family and suggests resources and organizations.
